Nanoparticle fear over anti-odour socks
Safety fears were raised yesterday about the use of minute "nanoparticles" of silver to make non smelly socks and infection-fighting bandages.
Valued for it's antibacterial properties, for instance in fighting bugs responsible for foot odour, nanoparticle silver is becoming the star attraction in a range of products from socks to bandages to washing machines. But scientists are calling for more effort to be made to ensure there are no unforeseen environmental and health consequences.
The general public needs to be aware that there are unknown risks
associated with the products they buy containing nanomaterials," Dr
Paul Westerhoff and Troy Benn of Arizona State University say in a
report to the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in New
