Multicomponent reactions step up a gear

The first reaction (red) forms an imidazoline, then the components for the second (blue) MCR are added to form an N-(cyanomethyl)-amide. The two halves are then united by benzylamine and isobutyraldehyde in an Ugi reaction

Dutch chemists have taken multicomponent reactions to the next level, combining a total of eight different starting materials in a single flask, bringing together three different multicomponent reactions and making nine new bonds in a single step.  More...
