Faced with escalating oil prices that are likely to continue rising, the chemical industry is trying to find alternative sources for a number of the chemical ingredients derived from petroleum and other fossil-sources.

One such ingredient is succinic acid, which is currently made mainly from fossil-derived maleic anhydride and provides the basic four-carbon backbone for a wide range of products including pharmaceuticals, coatings, polymers and resins. More...
