Dow introduces foam cell promoter for European polyvinyl chloride applications (pp. 1-1).
Dow Plastics Additives has introduced SURECEL™ 445 foam cell promoter as the latest addition to its family of additives for foam PVC applications. According to the company, the new processing aid has been developed to address the particular requirements of foam PVC applications in the European region.
Nubiola launches heat-resistant yellow iron oxide (pp. 2-2).
Spanish inorganic pigments specialist Nubiola has addressed the inherent colour instability of yellow iron oxides at high temperatures, which has previously restricted their use in the coloration of plastics and coatings. The company has developed an encapsulation technology, which has resulted in the recent commercial launch of heat-resistant yellow iron oxide Nubifer Y-7050.
Henkel, Tecnaro collaborate to develop renewable additives for high-performance bioplastics (pp. 2-2).
In Germany, consumer products company Henkel AG has successfully collaborated with compounder and biopolymer specialist Tecnaro GmbH in developing new high-performance polyamide additives based on renewable raw materials. According to the partners, the new Macromelt additives can significantly improve the performance of bio-based plastics, allowing them to meet rising expectations concerning their quality and processing characteristics as the diversity of applications for these materials grows.
Minerals Technologies presents new line of reinforcements for bioplastics applications (pp. 2-3).
Specialty Minerals Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary of minerals products manufacturer Minerals Technologies Inc, has launched a new product line of engineered mineral additives for reinforcement in bioplastic applications. The products being introduced are designed for bioplastic-based consumer disposables such as packaging, food and beverage service ware, gift cards, signage, films and bags.
PolyOne's CNT technology wins Chinese innovation award (pp. 3-4).
PolyOne Corp has received the 2011 Ringier Technology Innovation Award for the Plastics Industry for its new Stat-Tech™ NT carbon nanotube (CNT) conductive filler formulations [ ADPO, July 2011]. Judged by an independent panel of plastics industry experts, the award recognizes that Stat-Tech NT is an advanced technology solution that enables customers to ‘differentiate their product offerings, improve operational efficiency and make innovation possible', the company says.
ColorMatrix opens UK-based global technology centre, reveals gsdi expansion plans (pp. 4-5).
Liquid colorants and additives firm ColorMatrix has expanded its international facilities with the opening of a technology centre at its UK site in Knowsley, near Liverpool. The company says that the £1 million (c. €1.15 million; US$1.6 million) investment will allow it to enhance its capabilities in research and development, materials analysis and product testing and trialling.
Dow expands UK capacity for MBS-based additives, reports 2Q 2011 results ahead of forecasts (pp. 4-4).
Dow Plastics Additives is constructing additional plant to extend capacity and improve technology at its Grangemouth manufacturing facility in the UK. The expansion, which is expected to become fully operational during the fourth quarter of 2011, will ‘significantly increase’ capacity for methyl-methacrylate butadiene styrene (MBS)-based additives at the Scottish facility, the company says.
Hubron assists Proviron to establish UK, Irish foothold (pp. 5-6).
Manchester-based Hubron Speciality, a distributor of speciality modifiers and functional additives to the polymer sector, is to assist Proviron in establishing a market position for its Proviplast® brand plasticizers in the UK and Ireland. Proviron's plasticizer products are based on adipate, citrate, sebacate and sulfonamide formulations.
Performance Additives unveils first US manufacturing facility (pp. 6-6).
Behn Meyer company Performance Additives has opened its first US production plant, in New Philadelphia, OH, USA. The facility is located on an area of 3.5 acres, with plenty of space for future expansion, the company comments.
H.I.G. Capital acquires Dow's Haltermann Products (pp. 6-7).
Funds advised by H.I.G. European Capital Partners GmbH, part of global private equity firm H.I.G. Capital, have acquired the business of Haltermann Products from The Dow Chemical Company. The purchased company is a Germany-based producer of hydrocarbon chemicals as well as test and reference fuels, with two state-of-the-art manufacturing sites in Hamburg and Speyer.
Ashland purchases ISP for US$3.2 billion (pp. 7-7).
Ashland Inc, a global provider of speciality chemical solutions for the consumer and industrial markets, has acquired privately owned International Specialty Products Inc (ISP) in an all-cash transaction for US$3.2 billion, subject to post-closing adjustments. ISP is a global manufacturer of innovative functional ingredients and technologies.
PCC takes over Polysource, opens masterbatch solutions centre (pp. 8-8).
Plastics Color Corp (PCC), the Illinois-based supplier of colour concentrates, compounds and additive masterbatches for the plastics industry, has announced the acquisition of Polysource LLC and its Pinnacle Color subsidiary, a colour and additives manufacturer and distributor located in Tempe, AZ, USA. The newly named Plastics Distribution Corp (PDC) will be a wholly owned subsidiary of PCC.
Chemtura continues strong year-on-year improvement in 2Q 2011 results (pp. 9-10).
For the second quarter of 2011, Chemtura Corp reported net earnings from continuing operations on a GAAP basis of US$69 million on net sales of $876 million. For the same period of 2010, the company reported a net loss from continuing operations of $41 million on net sales of $767 million.
Momentive expands capacity for silanes, boron nitride; opens Indian R&D centre (pp. 9-9).
Momentive Performance Materials Inc is expanding production capacity for silanes at its manufacturing facilities in Sistersville, WV, USA, and Termoli, Italy, to help meet growing demand for these products from its global customer base, particularly in China. The company is also enhancing capacity for boron nitride powders, and is in the process of constructing a regional R&D centre and business headquarters in India.
Ferro delivers ‘solid earnings’ in the second quarter of 2011 (pp. 10-10).
Cleveland-based Ferro Corp posted net sales of US$594 million for the quarter ended 30 June 2011, an increase of 9% from $543 million in 2Q 2010. Net income improved to $19.6 million compared with $7.6 million in the prior-year quarter.
Europe's PVC industry launches VinylPlus initiative (pp. 11-11).
Following the success of the Vinyl 2010 initiative, the European PVC industry has announced an ambitious new set of targets for sustainable development to 2020. The VinylPlus programme is built around five commitments aimed at: achieving a ‘quantum leap’ in recycling rates of PVC and the development of innovative recycling technologies; addressing concerns about organochlorine emissions; ensuring the sustainable use of additives; enhancing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy and raw materials in PVC production; and promoting sustainability throughout the value chain.
