PolyOne presents CNT portfolio, extends OnCap additives family (pp. 1-2).
Global polymer materials specialist PolyOne Corp has launched the first offerings in its new Stat-Tech™ NT carbon nanotube (CNT) portfolio, including formulations based on polyoxymethylene (POM; acetal), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polycarbonate (PC) and other thermoplastic engineering materials. The company has also added new UV stabilizer and processing additives to its OnCap™ range. The new products were unveiled at several trade shows in May 2011, including Brasilplast, Chinaplas and Interpack.
BASF launches light stabilizer for Asian markets and antiblocking agent for PA films (pp. 2-3).
BASF SE used the Chinaplas 2011 event in May to launch a new light stabilizer tailored for the Asian market. The result of four years of development, Tinuvin® XT 100 protects film made from thermoplastic resins against overly fast degradation when exposed to UV light.
Chemtura's polymeric flame retardant receives market launch; growth plans revealed (pp. 3-4).
Great Lakes Solutions, a Chemtura business, has launched its new brominated polymeric flame retardant for expanded and extruded polystyrene foam applications under the name Emerald™ 3000. The new product extends the company's existing Emerald range of high-performing, more eco-friendly fire safety solutions for the global building & construction and electrical & electronics industries. Emerald 3000 was introduced to the international markets at the Brasilplast and Chinaplas plastics trade shows in May.
Dow teams up with PolyOne for PLA impact modifier, expands Engage range (pp. 4-5).
Dow Plastics Additives, a division of Dow Chemical, has joined forces with PolyOne Corp to introduce OnCap™ BIO L masterbatch, which is claimed to improve production efficiencies for bioplastics used in packaging applications. Dow has also introduced a new grade of polyolefin elastomer for automotive TPOs.
Oxea unveils range of non-VOC, phthalate-free plasticizers (pp. 4-4).
Germany's Oxea has launched a range of phthalate-free and non-VOC plasticizers under the new brand name Oxsoft, in order to support the increasing market shift towards these types of products. According to the company, Oxsoft products can be used to replace traditional phthalate plasticizers in a broad variety of end uses such as automotive, construction, food and medical applications.
REACH registration success for Roquette's bio-based plasticizer (pp. 5-5).
France's Roquette reports that its bio-based plasticizer Polysorb® ID 37 has been successfully registered under the EU REACH regulation for the highest tonnage band (>1000 tonnes/year).
Sanitized adds antimicrobial for polyurethanes, adopts new strategy for plastics market (pp. 5-6).
Swiss company Sanitized AG is expanding its product offering for polymers with the introduction of antimicrobial additive Sanitized® TPL 27-40 for use in the foam and coating polyurethane (PUR) industry. The company is also now following a direct commercialization strategy concerning its products for the plastics market after a ‘successful partnership’ with Clariant's additives business unit for a number of years.
DuPont announces comprehensive expansion of global TiO2 capabilities (pp. 6-7).
World number one titanium dioxide (TiO2) producer DuPont has announced a TiO2 expansion plan that will add about 350 000 tonnes/year of global capacity and strengthen the company's capability to meet the increasing demand for the white pigment from its customers in the coatings, paper, plastics and laminates industries. The expansion includes new production facilities at the company's Altamira site in Mexico as well as additional investments to improve the productivity at its other TiO2 sites around the world.
WestMoonint introduces dual-purpose additive for PVC and acrylic (pp. 6-6).
Chinese synthetic rubber manufacturer WestMoonint has launched ACVM, a new type of PVC or acrylic processing aid and acrylic impact modifier. The product is claimed to be more efficient and cost-effective than traditional PVC or acrylic processing aids.
Solvay and Rhodia agree friendly merger deal (pp. 7-7).
Belgium's Solvay has launched a friendly cash offer for 100% of the share capital of French company Rhodia. At €31.60 per share (ex dividend of €0.5 per share), the offer values the equity of Rhodia at €3.4 billion and the enterprise value at €6.6 billion. The offer was to be launched in France on 14 June and extended to the USA and, subject to the necessary approvals, is expected to close by late August.
Continental Carbon, Kemya collaborate over new greenfield carbon black plant in Saudi Arabia (pp. 8-8).
Houston-based carbon black and carbon nanotube (CNT) manufacturer Continental Carbon Co has signed a long-term technology licensing agreement with Al-Jubail Petrochemical Co (Kemya), a 50/50 joint venture between Saudi Basic Industries Corp (SABIC) and affiliates of ExxonMobil Chemical. Under the agreement's terms, Continental Carbon licenses its production technology related to the construction and operation of a new greenfield carbon black plant at Kemya's petrochemical complex at Al-Jubail in Saudi Arabia.
SI Group and Velox combine to distribute dicumene flame retardant in Europe (pp. 8-8).
Chemical manufacturer SI Group (Schenectady, NY, USA) and Hamburg-based raw materials distribution and sales specialist Velox have signed an agreement for the distribution of dicumene across Europe, except in Italy.
ColorMatrix completes Gayson Silicone Dispersions acquisition (pp. 8-9).
In the USA, ColorMatrix Corp, which provides advanced performance additive, colorant and dosing technologies for the thermoplastics industry, has acquired fellow Ohio-based company Gayson Silicone Dispersions Inc. The move supports ColorMatrix's on-going expansion into new markets and technologies through internal R&D and acquisitions, while also enabling the extension of its application capabilities.
Ferro reports improved results for 1Q 2011 (pp. 9-10).
For the first quarter of 2011 ended 31 March, Ferro Corp posted net income of US$23.2 million on net sales of $573 million. This represents a considerable improvement from a loss of $0.8 million on net sales of $493 million for the same period in 2010. Adjusted net income, excluding charges, was $26 million this year compared with $18 million in 1Q 2010.
Honeywell triples capacity for low GWP blowing agent (pp. 9-9).
Honeywell reports that it has tripled production capacity for its low global-warming-potential (GWP) product HFO-1234ze to meet the growing need for the material, which is used in multiple foam and aerosol applications. The production expansion was made at Honeywell's small-scale HFO-1234ze manufacturing facility at its Buffalo Research Lab in Buffalo, NY, USA, and was achieved through equipment upgrades and overall productivity improvements during the past 18 months.
Cytec posts threefold jump in first-quarter earnings (pp. 10-10).
New Jersey-based Cytec Industries reported net earnings for the first quarter of 2011 of US$83.2 million on net sales of $766 million. In 1Q 2010, net earnings were $24.8 million on net sales of $646.5 million. Excluding special items and earnings from discontinued operations (including Building Block Chemicals), net earnings from continuing operations attributable to Cytec were $39.1 million in 1Q 2011 and $28.9 million a year earlier.
