At the recent K 2010 show in Düsseldorf, Germany, Cytec Industries Inc highlighted an expanded range of Cyasorb Cynergy Solutions® stabilizers for plastics and coatings, Clariant launched a ‘unique’ UV stabilizer for automotive applications and Dover Chemical Corp unveiled a ‘green’ liquid antioxidant as well as a new lubricant for wood–plastic composites.

Polymer additives specialist Songwon Industrial Co, Ltd of South Korea has signed a letter of intent with India's HPL Additives Ltd concerning the formation of Songwon HPL Additives PVT Ltd as a joint venture (JV) for the production and marketing of polymer stabilizers. Elsewhere, the company has also finalized an agreement with Tangshan Baifu Chemical Co Ltd to establish an antioxidants JV in China. Together these initiatives will improve Songwon's access to fast-growing markets in India, the Middle East and China.

Following the recent termination of plans for an antioxidant blends joint venture based in Saudi Arabia [ ADPO, September 2010], BASF has now announced that it will build a new production facility for customer specific antioxidant blends (CSB) in Bahrain. The company is strengthening its presence in the Middle East to support the region's strongly growing polymer industry.

Munich-based Baerlocher has announced the formation of a manufacturing joint venture for the production of liquid mixed metal stabilizers in China's Jiangsu province. The joint venture is a formal partnership between Baerlocher and Chinese company Uniwel and has been named Jiangsu U & B Liquid Stabilizer Manufacturing Co Ltd.
A. Schulman purchases Brazilian masterbatch producer, reports improved fiscal year results (pp. 7-8).
In Brazil, A. Schulman has agreed to purchase Mash Compostos Plasticos, a masterbatch additive producer and engineered plastics compounder based in Sao Paulo. The acquisition will further expand the company's presence in Brazil, which is viewed as a key market in its overall growth strategy. The transaction was expected to close on 3 November 2010, pending customary closing procedures.

US firm Omnova Solutions Inc has entered into an agreement with AXA Private Equity that grants it a ‘period of exclusivity’ to acquire French speciality chemicals manufacturer Eliokem International. Omnova is proposing to pay € 227.5 million, or about US$300 million at current exchange rates, for Eliokem, the former speciality chemicals business of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. AXA acquired its majority stake in the company in 2006 [ ADPO, November 2006].

Louisiana-based Albemarle Corp reported third quarter 2010 earnings of US$93.7 million, compared to 3Q 2009 earnings of $52.1 million. Net sales for the 2010 quarter were $585 million, up 14% from net sales of $515 million for the same period in 2009. Earnings for the nine months ended 30 September 2010 were $238.7 million on net sales of $1.76 billion, compared to earnings of $116.0 million on net sales of $1.45 billion for the same period in 2009.

For the third quarter of 2010, BASF SE reports that demand for its products continued to be high, with hardly any sign of the usual seasonal slowdown. Sales for 3Q 2010 were up 23% year on year to €15.8 billion while EBIT before special items expanded by 77% to reach €2.2 billion.

For the quarter ended 30 September 2010, Ferro Corp announced net sales of US$529 million, an increase of 20% from net sales of $442 million in 3Q 2009. However, the company's operating results for the 2010 third quarter included net pre-tax charges of $42.7 million, resulting in a loss from continuing operations of $2.4 million. This compares to income from operations of $2.8 million in 3Q 2009 when net pre-tax charges were significantly lower at $14.1 million.

The widely used general-purpose plasticizer di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has been registered under the European Union's new chemicals legislation REACH well ahead of the 30 November 2010 deadline. The registration enables the continued manufacturing and use of DEHP in the EU.

Werner Koch Maschinentechnik GmbH is extending its range of Koch-Technik branded peripherals for plastics processing with the addition of a gravimetric direct dosing device for use on injection moulding machines. The Exako was presented for the first time at the K 2010 show in Düsseldorf.

The widely used general-purpose plasticizer di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has been registered under the European Union's new chemicals legislation REACH well ahead of the 30 November 2010 deadline. The registration enables the continued manufacturing and use of DEHP in the EU.
