This course covers contemporary coatings science topics. You will learn about technology that helps you understand and solve coatings needs while also meeting existing environmental regulations. You will also find out how to select appropriate coatings components for your use, overcome the limitations of contemporary coatings technology, and understand the role of resins and polymers, pigments, solvents, and additives in a coatings formulation. Interactions between coatings components and the function that each plays in the manufacture and performance of polymeric coatings will also be covered.
* Mechanisms/methods of polymer formation including chain growth, step growth, ring opening polymerizations, and emulsion polymerization.
* How to design, synthesize, formulate, and evaluate polymeric coatings.
* Pigments and nano-fillers, extender pigments, pigment volume concentration, metal and corrosion inhibiting pigments.
* Additives in coatings; their functions and uses.
* Chemistry and interactions of coatings components necessary for the design and preparation of high performance and specialty coatings.
* Design and formulation of waterborne, high-solids and powder coatings that meet current VOC regulations.
* Coatings formulations including examples of trade sales, industrial, and specialty coatings.
* Polyesters, acrylics, vinyl acrylics, polyurethanes, epoxy resins, phenolic resins, organosilanes, and other silicon containing coatings polymers for coatings applications.
* Molecular level processes in polymeric coatings; film formation, stratification of individual components.
* Stimuli-responsive polymeric films and coatings, smart coatings and nano-coatings components; design requirements and considerations
